Documenting decisions

I work in a small company that is very sparse in documentation and what documentation we have frequently does not provide the information that we need down the road. I there read with interest these blog entries: http://blogs.msdn.com/b/nickmalik/archive/2010/11/20/are-we-documenting-the-wrong-things.aspx, http://duckdown.blogspot.com/2010/11/documentation-cannot-compile-run-or-do.html.

10 Strategic Technologies

Gartner released this list of 10 Strategic technologies:
  • Cloud Computing
  • Mobile Applications and Media Tablets
  • Social Communications and Collaboration
  • Video
  • Next Generation Analytics
  • Social Analytics
  • Context-Aware Computing
  • Storage Class Memory
  • Ubiquitous Computing
  • Fabric-Based Infrastructure and Computers
Plenty to discuss here. The first three are obviously pretty huge already and definitely on the upswing. The Analytics items seem like covering the bases.

The Storage class memory one I think could be very interesting. The abstract architecture of a computer has not really changed in 20 years (or longer). We have two storage mediums, 'fast and temporary' or 'slow and persistent'. Flash memory gives us 'fast and persistent'. Right now it seems like we are using flash to make drives faster but what if we treated them as another class of storage?
